A dangerous essential oil, but if used properly does have its place in treating acute pain. Wintergreen can be a powerful pain reliever. However, it is too potentially dangerous to use on a routine basis. Properly diluted, especially in a base of St. John’s Wort infused oil, it can ease acute pain of gout or arthritis. But, it is NOT an oil to be used long term.

WARNINGS: Use with extreme caution! Because of its high content of methyl salicylate, which builds up in the body, wintergreen can be poisonous. Never use internally, and do not use if medications containing methyl salicylate are also being used.

Irritant and sensitizer; use in local application only. Keep away from children as its candy-like aroma can result in poisoning!
